Indeed, Christian, this is missing. S/N > 100 at R > 5000 are fine. I quote Tony Moffat: This time we don’t need quite as intense phase coverage, since we only want to see if the behaviour of CIII 5696 and HeI 5876 repeat from one cycle to the next. However, it’s always good to get as good coverage as the weather permits. Cheers, Thomas |

Hi Thomas, As you have probably seen I have posted this new project to the SASER ring but realistically I think Paulo Cacella in Brasilia (-15 lat) is our only likely contributor. Cheers, Bernard |

Yes, Bernard, I've seen it. But Paulo will probably be clouded out in winter, as he described it. Maybe our French colleagues will jump in. Cheers, Thomas |

Hi Berthold, The central emission line is from the O star. You can see it move relative to the WR star line in this plot I made during the last periastron http://www.threehillsobservatory.co.uk/ ... n_fast.gif This is a first test of my current setup for the WR140 campaign (LHIRES 1200 35um slit C11). Yes it was a very long exposure. (10x600s), longer than I will need in future. The SNR is very high, probably >500 per resolution element measured in the pseudo continuum. Resolution is R~4500 Cheers Robin -----Original Message----- From: Berthold Stober Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2016 5:20 PM To: fg-spek-admin@vdsastro.de Subject: [fg spektroskopie] Re: New campaign announcement Link zum neuen Beitrag: http://spektroskopieforum.vdsastro.de/v ... 451#p27997 Hi Robin, Nice to hear from you. Hi all, I am a research associate at Ankara University, the Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences in Turkey. Our department has an observatory (http://rasathane.en.ankara.edu.tr/) outside of the city and we have conducted several scientific researches there. My supervisor Dr. Ian Stevens from the University of Birmingham informed me about your new campaign on WR140. In the observatory, we have a shelyak echelle spectrograph with a resolution between 12000 and 15000. It uses thorium-argon lamb for the calibrations. Me and my colleagues made a test observation for WR140 in the end of the August and derived three good spectra covering 4000-7000 A. If there is no obstacle, we would like to contribute your campaign. So, I would be grateful if you could tell what is needed. Cheers, Dr. Dogus Ozuyar |

Hi, ok this part of an echelle(?)- spektrum is ok. What instrument you used for taking this spectrum? How long was the exposure time, what the S/N? What was the software you used for datareduction? What was the date of the exposure? Did you realize, that the "new compaigne" ask for spectra of WR140 in january or february 2017? At this time we cannot reach this star. cheers berthold |

Hi, last Friday I took the attached spectrum of WR140. It was a test for my objective grating setup (5cm*5cm 300L/mm Thorlabs grating, in front of a 60/330mm ED refractor). Due to the small aperture, I had to choose quite a long exposure time (in total, 67 * 2 minutes). I'm wondering if spectra of this quality could be of any use for your campain. Resolution is about 4500 with a S/N of 140 (@5700Å, CIII-plateau, according to SpectroTools). Since the sky was a little bit hazy, I guess the S/N could be improved to some extent when observing at better conditions. In addition, a yellow filter should also help to further reduce the background. Stacking was done using Astroart (together with hot pixel filtering and defect map correction), the linear wavelength calibration was made with RSpec. Because of the slitless mode operation, wavelength calibration first was performed on nearby star Sadr (Gamma Cygni). This calibration then was used to "fix" the Na-D line at 5890Å in the WR140 spectrum. In addition, an instrumental response correction had been applied (to get rid of the ripples introduced by the ICX694 camera chip - since I can't use flats in contrast to slit spectrographs...). Cheers Uwe

Hi, We used a shelyak echelle spectrograph connected to a 40-cm telescope. The resolution was around 12000 with a S/N of 100. The exposure time was 2700 seconds. The data reduction was made by using the Audela software. Cheers. |

Dear Uwe, Such a spectrum is quite useful for our campaign. However, if you can get slightly higher S/N (c. 200 in the continuum), that would be better. In any case, we might be able to bin a bit to enhance the S/N. Please recall that the best time to get lots of spectra well distributed in orbital phase is around periastron from about mid Nov through late January - the worst time possible for a Cygnus object. This requires unusual effort, but well worth it! Here is a spectrum taken the last night with a newtonian 8" and a DADOS slit-spectrograph, using a 1200 l/mm gratting and 25 um slit. Five exposures of 10 minutes averaged, calibrated with a RELCO lamp (6 lines) and the instrumental response corrected using HIP 99870 (A2 V) as comparison star. I am sorry but I don't know how to calculate the S/N relationship ![]() Also I am doing BVR photometry (Johnson-Cousins) of this star with a KAF 1603ME, but I still haven't reduced these observations because I'm undecided which comparison star should I choose. Hello, this is a test I performed on last monday (JD 2457728.2707 - 2457728.3900) with a self-constructed assembly of a 600l/mm transmission grating, sandwiched by two 1o° prisms. This grating/prism array was operated in slitless mode in the converging beam of a 10" SCT (focal length with reducer: 1135mm). The resolution is only moderate (about 3300 at Na-D), S/N about 300 in the continuum @5750Å (calculated from counting statistics per 0,72Å binning interval). Wavelength calibration was achieved by using ISM lines in this region. Total exposures: 80*2min. Cheers, Uwe

Olivier, Uwe, that is great stuff. ![]() To all! For the ongoing campaigns with Tony Moffat and Noel Richardson (WR 140 in the North and gamma Vel in the South) we all agree that even a single spectrum contributed to these investigations will end in co-authorships! In addition, in an email exchange with them Tony explicitely acknowledged the way how SASER (quote) „performs close cooperation whith pros for given targets data management, rather than making the data immediately public, so the pro’s idea can be easily stolen“. Hi,all, after solving some problems reducing my spectra, here you are the results. I try to obtain the highest S/N possible, but even exposing 1200", due to the limited diametre of my scope (8") and especially the bad seeing, the S/N is not very high. I'm going to send these results to Tony Moffat, if you believe they are OK. Anyway, I have some photometric images waiting to be reduced but the AAVSO charts doesn't have good comparison stars. I have been considering HD 193888, HD 193926 or (better) HD 193632 as comparison stars, but I don't have enough information about their magnitudes in B, V and specially, Rc. That's the reason I stopped doing photometry but if necessary, I could resume these observations. Do you know where can I find all these magnitudes? I have been looking at SIMBAD database and there's information about B and V magnitudes, but nothing about Rc. Greetings Fran

Hi, all some days ago I tried to take a spectrum of WR 140. Clouds were nasty and they, together with the (still) short window of observation, only allowed me to take one single shot of 1200", but I have compared it with the first spectrum I took in October. I don't see differences, it seems that the "party" has finished. Well, I could try to take another spectrum from some days now, when WR 140 will be a bit better placed! Greetings Fran
