Hello everyone :D

It seems that I cannot open any .fit file from the Spectrum library or any other .fit attached in posts in the forum.

I have used 3-4 software and none can open them.

Does anyone else have this problem?
I am using Win7.

Greetings
Alex

Hello Alexandros,

I tried just to open the new spectrum of Thierry Garel in "Request for observations of the 2mag star delta Orionis". IRIS, ISIS, VSpec and Maxim DL wasn't able to open the fit-file. Only Audela was able.
I don't know the reasons for that.

I dodn?t have any problem opening Thierry?s del Ori spectra in ISIS or VSpec. Maxim DL never could open 1D spectra

Cheers, Bernard

I have no problems with the fits files here, I just download and drag and drop them into Visual Spec for example

Cheers

Hello

thank you all for your input. :D

IRAF also cannot open Thierry's fit.

VSpec cannot be installed on my Win version( Win7 Home premium 64 bit.)

I tried once more with IRIS.
I managed to open the file but i had to go to the ''Profile'' tab and search for the fit.

I don't know why but each software was reporting a different error.
E.g. IRIS-''not wnough memory''.
ISIS- something in French about 2-xis .fit.

other software were reporting that the files cannot be read as fit files.

By thw way BASS can open it with no complaints.

Hi Alex,

Maybe I?m wrong but I get the impression that you are assuming that all FIT files are the same format. The spectral file you are trying to view is what is called a ?1D? (one dimensional) type as it basically a tabular listing of wavelength vs. amplitude values and that type of FIT does need a ?spectroscopy? friendly program to view with ... VSpec, ISIS, IRIS, Rspec, SPAudace, Audela, IRAF, MIDAS etc. The more commonly known FIT format is the 2D (two dimensional) image type which is used to record our ?pretty picture ? and photometry images, and that is the only FIT type that Maxim DL (and most other software) knows about. I have no problem viewing Thierry?s spectra with ISIS, VSpec or Audela.

I?m surprised you have a problem running VSpec with Win7-64 as I?m sure I?ve read that others can.

Cheers, Bernard

Hello

I am only talking about fits from other spectroscopists.
Particularly I can see Thierry's spectrum only with BASS and ISIS if I open it as described above.

So I guess that this is the case about MAximDL, Fitswork and other software used mainly to process ''normal'' fits.

Hi Alex

I can open it in all the programs I have which can handle 1D fits files. It definitely opens in Vspec. Note it is a 1D fits file, not a 2D image so you must open it as a profile in ISIS and VSpec, not an image.

There is no such thing as a "normal" fits. The fits file format is just a way of storing tables of data which can be anything. Astrophotographers usually first come across images stored as fits files and are surprised when they find it is actually used to store any astronomical information. MaximDL and other imaging software generally cannot handle fits data except as an image.

Cheers
Robin

Hello
By the way BASS can open it with no complaints.
Looking at your screen shot, it does not look like BASS has opened it correctly. It has not displayed the calibrated wavelength. (It has just interpreted it as an image and displayed the pixel values along the row. Compare with ISIS for example which displays it correctly calibrated.

Robin

Are you installing and running as administrator? This is the usual reason it cannot be installed. See the note 5 at the bottom of this page

Hi Robin,

While I agree that there is no ?normal? FIT file format when I used that term it was in the context that the FIT file 99% of amateurs come across is the 2D image format ... most amateurs probably never realise that there are other FIT types.

Cheers, Bernard

Hello,

if you do not know what is the content of the FIT file, then you can use fv:
http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/fv
to inspect it (the header should indicate the type and other details). It has opened for me even multi order echelle spectra and all kind of tables. You can also save the relevant columns of the table, e.g. if the spectra are shown with S/N info you can eliminate this column and save the file in a form readable with VSPEC or whatever you prefer.

Regards,

Martin
