For the first time held at Observatory Haunsberg near Salzburg Austria from May 30-June 1, 33 people from 13 countries, 3 continents attended.

The 3 days were full with talks in English, from amateur and professional spectroscopists. Baader Planetarium and Shelyak attended.

This is a new facility; the observatories contain 2 telescopes a 40cm RC with Echelle spectrograph and a 1m ASA EQ 1000 RC F7 equatorial telescope. We had 1 night on the 1m telescope viewing many Messier objects. The central star in M57 was an easy target for the 1m, M81 and M104 showed lots of detail, in very dark transparent skies with excellent seeing and no light pollution.

All in all, I learn’t a lot and made new friends. This symposium proved to be productive and important, for the future of international am-pro collaboration.

I would like to thank the organisers Manfred Schwarz, Herbert Puhringer, Ernst Pollman for their hard work and efforts in making this a success.

I encourage people to support the next symposium.

Sorry, Jack, not for the first time… first rank goes to the international conference of the VdS section spectroscopy four weeks before. And we have the girls…. Hope to see you at our next meeting in Lübeck: http://spektroskopie.vdsastro.de/conference-124.html

Best, Thomas

We're one spectroscopy community, aren't we, just on two conferences. That's no problem!

Thomas,

Indeed we are, but Aspekt conference needs to be in English, the international language of Astronomy.

That's what I've been saying for years, Jack. You make my day with this comment. In fact, for the main part of the conference we are english speaking, indeed. At least our non German speaking participants are going easily along with it. But anyway, you're right.
Cheers, Thomas

Thomas,

Ideally the 2 conferences should be combined and in English.

Thomas,

All the talks need to be in English, otherwise its pointless attending.

Also, that may attract more people.

Some years ago I visited the Niece observatory, most of the tour was in French even though the guide spoke English !

Jack

It is always a matter of good will and compromise, Jack. Dont’t forget that there are also some participants who do not speak english. Yes, english is the international language in astronomy but it gives you a significant advantage in the world non-anglophones do not have. What do we do with them? Leaving behind? I guess you don’t want that. What do you suggest then? It is not as straight forward as you might guess. We even tried simultaneous translation for the small number of pure german talks. It is impossible to do that permamently. As a compromise we ask colleagues to give a talk in german with english power point slides and vice versa. Filipe Dias realized that problem and he goes along with that. In turn we try as much as possible to give him a benefit. This seems to be sufficient for him and he comes every year. His partizipation pushes us towards a good international communication. I can't suggest a pure english conference to the organizers without anglophone participants as supporters. You and other collegues of the Vega conference should join our meeting next year in Lübeck and/or in two years in Heidelberg.

Cheers, Thomas

Thomas,

There is no easy answer to this. We should not exclude people who don't speak English, everyone should be friendly and made to feel welcome. Compromise and goodwill as you suggest are the keys to success. I have seen this work well at OHP in France where there were some non English speaking people. The powerpoint translation is a good idea.

Jack
