I have some fits files from the STELLA echelle spectrograph
http://www.aip.de/stella/index.php?id=summary
but I cannot read them with any of the software I have.
(fv,SPLAT,specview,Vspec,Rlhires)

Is there anyone who can help?

Thanks
Robin

This is difficult, since you did not supply much information :-)

Is there an error message, when you open the file in fv? You could try
to use the fits verify program available from:

http://fits.gsfc.nasa.gov/fits_verify.html

If this does not help, could you make one of the files available? Since
the files are probably large, you could e.g. use yousendit or a similar
service.

Thanks
Robin
Best regards,
Otmar

Maybe fitswork can open it:

Hi Torsten,

I had not seen that program before so I tried it but it expects the fits file to be an image, not data so it tries to convert the 82 wavelength calibrated echelle order spectra into an image. A very interesting effect but no quite what I need

I have sent Lothar an example of the file. Perhaps he can work out how to view the data

Cheers
Robin

Ok. I think I understand. These are reduced data? So it is likely that
these are FITS-tables, not images. which many FITS-readers cannot handle.

Lothar, if you cannot handle the data, I can try :-)

Thank You Robin,

some time later, in the evening, when I will be at home, I will try.

Hello Robin,

with MIDAS there is no problem to read and to work with that file.
It's the spectrum of eps Aur.
See annex.

It's a echelle spectrum, no calibration. 2043 Pixels and 83 orders. All details in the header.

You can also open the file with
fv: FITS Viewer and Editor (version 5.2.1)
and see the file, its header and the 83 orders.

Hallo,
muß mich korrigieren.
Im header des files steht für jede Ordnung die Anfangswellenlänge drin und die Dispersion (A/pix). Also lassen sich die Spektren auch in kalibrierter Form darstellen.
spec23 = "23 8' WAT2_103= '7 2 6500.7926287096 0.041059415680497 2043 0. 725.91 730.59 0.966365'........

Ah, now we are making progress. But what are the other numbers for each order in the header? Also the file has three layers, not just the flux What are the other layers? Also why is the blaze still in the spectrum and how can I remove it without a flat? I think I need to go back to the STELLA team for more help and get a definition for the file.

Thanks for your help
Robin

Hello Robin,

Otmar has made a script for the reading and extraktion of the normalized spectra of all orders.
Flats and so on, the complete data reduction procedure is made in the data. Also the normalized spectra are written in.

The Midas procedure of otmar is running on my laptop and gives the orders spectra (calibrated and calibrated + normalized) as fits. Very fine script.

Are you able to run MIDAS? If not, then I can reduce the spectra for you. The 83 spectra, extracted of your file, I will send you by E-mail.

Wow!! that is fantastic. Thank you so much Lothar and Otmar.
I do have MIDAS (on the astrolinux disc) but I have not used it. Now will be a good time for to learn.

Best Wishes
Robin
