Hi folks, today I had the following exchange with Hawaii. Cheers, Thomas Zitat: IP : 172.21.155.32 Subject : Sky & Telescope Article Nachricht : Dr. Eversberg, I enjoyed your article VERY much. I found it very exciting and would like to participate in a project like you have undertaken. I am an amateur astronomer on Maui. Our site is at 10,000 ft. elevation at the summit of Haleakala and is affiliated with the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy. We are at the 21st parallel as you know, and we are avid observers from our location. We have access to the Faulkes Telescope, part of the LCOGTN network of robotic telescopes. Our group, the Haleakala Amateur Astronomers, observe many night per month from this location. I would like to be in touch with you should you need observations from this part of the globe in the future. If you ever plan a visit to Hawaii, let us know and we would love for you to visit, (and observe), from our location. Name : Stephen McGaughey Email : semcg@hawaiiantel.net ______________________________ Hi Stephen, that's a really good message. Thank you for being interested in our group. As you have seen on the ConVento webpage we are working on spectroscopy and photometry on massive stars and try to push science forward. New sites are very welcome, especially more in the south and on first class places as Hawaii. Your latitude is an additional advantage, of course. Do you use a spectrograph or is it for photometry only? Presently we are more or less in a starting phase after our WR140 campaign. However, we got 10 nights at Teide again, now for the periastron passage of the Be star delta Sco in July 2011. A ConVento team around José Ribeiro (management) and Anatoly Miroshnichenko (science) from Greensboro University are going to the IAC 80 telescope. So, you can see we are busy but need to establish ourselves and have to bind together all interested astronomers. This weekend we had the annual meeting of the German spectroscopy section and discussed new Wolf-Rayet targets for future campaigns. We try to make up our minds and go fot it in about two years. For convenience I recommend to register in our bilingual discussion forum at http://spektroskopieforum.vdsastro.de so that you can follow what happens and add your comments. I will place our exchange into the ConVento part of our forum so that everybody is informed about your message. Cheers, Thomas |

Hi Thomas and all, That's great news! South hemisphere observers are very important! Now we have a member in Australia and others at Hawaii. Thomas, take your time, and prepare us a campaign for the next eta Carinae periastron It would be very interesting if these new colleagues engaged the del Sco periastron campaign! Spectra as well as photometry are needed! Cheers, Jose Zitat: ----- Original Message -----

Thomas, your article was perfect, i was a little bit surprise and happy to read it, and i hope it will stimulate some news companions to join the Convento effort. I was waiting you announce it on others list for felicitation but it has not be done. So... Other thing: Can we plan to share or organize amateur observations project like Z cma, or HD57682, with articles at the end, in the Concento group ? Encore félicitation and welcome to the newcomers. Hi Thierry, yes, the article engouraged some colleagues to join ConVento, especially from the US. And Stephen from Hawaii is a special highlight. We lack observers from the south and he is 30 degrees below, e.g., my position. You are right, I did not announce it in other lists. I am sorry for that, but I definitely can not play on all possible web sites. I believe the article becomes well-known, anyway. But feel free to do so in spectro-l or anywhere else. Additional ProAm campaigns are very welcome. But please understand that I can not take the leadership here. I am busy with a lot of stuff, including new campaigns on WR stars. Hence, it would be great if your or somebody else familiar with the respective targets could do the job. And then I will certainly add it to the ConVento website. We await your input. Cheers, Thomas |

Thanks a lot Thomas. So there is a need for spectra coverage of HD57682, monoceros. This star is one of the five magnetic Oe stars discover in our galaxy. Its strong magnetic field is constraining an H alpha disk. We plan to determine a period in H alpha variation for ongoing publication. Spectra requirement are R>=10000, H alpha centered, SNR>20. One spectra every three days as we suspect a 30d period of the equivalent width, with possible multiple sub period. Campaign coordinator is Benjamin Mauclaire, ConVento menber, and all observations must be reported at his mail bmauclaire@gmail.com (bmauclaire@gmail.com). There is an ARAS page covering this campaign http://astrosurf.com/aras/surveys/bestars/hd57682 This star is full of promises for further studies and pro_am publications. Other target available is Z cma, a binaries pre-main sequence star in outburst. Spectra needing in visible and near infrared at all resolutions, low, medium, high. There is no publication up to date planned but there is a strong interest by professionals. I'm the coordinator of the campaign, ARAS page is http://astrosurf.com/aras/surveys/prestars/zcma Both targets are ideal for southern observers, like actually nova T pyxie is. Please note that there is a lack and a need of photometric data for HD57682. Hi Thierry! Gregor Rauw from Liège highlighted the Oe stars at our 2009 meeting in Recklinghausen and we had three of them on our Mons target list. According to my experience with WR140 I recommend to unfold a kind of an observing plan, including all potential active observers. In addition, it would be good to show the scientific goal including information about what will be done with all delivered spectra. In brief: Who will participate, why is Halpha important, what do we want to learn and who will reduce the spectra and publish the results? I strongly recommend to establish a well readable Anglophone website like that of WR140 at http://www.stsci.de/convento/ . Don’t forget, it is very difficult to understand the basic ideas if they are not well described. Even my WR140 site has its deficits here. For a successful campaign you can not invest enough work in respective information, including already published papers. Already obtained spectra are not enough. Take the amateurs with your hand and guide them through. If you could convince yourself that a WR140-like website could be convenient, I await your input. Then I will make the web pages. Cheers, Thomas |
