There is enough darkness here now to take two 1 hour spectra so here are my first campaign observations (raw neon calibrated spectra) from last night for WR 135, 137. The quality confirms the test results from last year (SNR 140 in an hour exposure at 1.3A resolution with a 280mm aperture C11, LHIRES with 1200 l/mm grating and ATIK 314L+ camera) Cheers Robin

Very nice, Robin! Can you also get WR134? Potentially yes, though the logistics of wavelength changes and flats make it tricky to get more than one observation of each per night Cheers Robin ----- Original Message ----- From: Tony Moffat (fg-spek-convento@vds-astro.de) To: fg-spek-convento@vds-astro.de (fg-spek-convento@vds-astro.de) Sent: Friday, July 12, 2013 8:34 PM Subject: [fg-spek] Re: WR 2013 campaign - results from Three Hills Observatory Very nice, Robin! There is now enough darkeness here to make multiple observations of targets. Here is an example of the change in WR135 over ~3 hours. I was surprised how little correlation was apparent in the detail at the top of the CIII line even after this relatively short interval. Wow! Fantastic stuff, Robin! You can't see any correlation because these features are the manifestion of stochastic clumps in the wind. Again, well done. Cheers, Thomas |

Well, if you had a denser series of spectra you would more easily see a correlation in the sense that the bumps on the blue (red) side of the line become even bluer (redder) with time (weakening or growing as they go), as in the most extensive work on this star so far: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2000AJ....120.3201L . This is a result of clumps in the wind propagating outward with the wind; we see the projected Doppler motion as they accelerate outwards in different parts of the wind (hot stellar winds are accelerated by radiation pressure pushing against gravity). But this work, as intense as it is, only extends over 3-4 days. In our pro-am campaign this summer, we will have 4 months (!) of coverage, allowing us to make far better statistics (e.g. histogram of clump size, with quantitative implications for compressible turbulence) and even search for a low-amplitude periodicity due to CIRs (co-rotating interaction regions, seen in some WR stars, but not all: why not?). Hope this helps!
