Betreff des Beitrags:  Issues with FITS files created by MIDAS

I recently processed some FITS files created by MaximDL in ESO-MIDAS.

After converting the modifed data from the internal BDF format to FITS again by using the OUTTAPE/FITS or OUTDISK/FITS format and trying to read this files by MaximDL again, I got some error messages and MaximDL can't open the processed files.

What's wrong?

... or does this has already been discussed somewhere else in this forum?

Georg.

Hi Georg,

I am sorry to admit that I know nothing about using MIDAS or its
OUTTAPE/FITS or OUTDISK/FITS formats, but if they are 1D FIT files (two
column amplitude vs. wavelength spectra data) then Maxim is unable to read
them, as it can only display 2D FIT files.

Cheers,
Bernard

Hi Bernard,

thank you for your answer, which points into the right direction.

So I checked the FITS header... NAXIS was 1... so MaximDL can't handle this. Consequently I edited the header by adding a entry NAXIS2 = 1 and change NAXIS to 2.... and suddenly by miracle, it works.

In principle their is no reason, why the software developers are not going to consider one-dimensional FIT files for a program of ~500 bugs and if you want to have updates more than 1 year after purchase you might have to pay ~170 again ...

Thank You!!
Georg.

There is a free program named fv running on all platforms that displays
all kind of fits files including fits tables.
