13P/Olbers on the evening of 2024 September 11 UT was magnitude G=8.8 as calculated from 18x10s images taken thru a green filter in an aperture diameter of 6'. The evening sky was a little hazy.

gestern Abend konnte ich 13 P/ Olbers nochmals beobachten:

20.9. 20h40 MESZ mv=9,2 mag; Koma ca. 2-3 ´; DC 3

Instrument: 125/5 Refraktor V= 28x

Das dürfte die wohl letzte visuelle Beobachtung von mir gewesen sein...

Hallo zusammen,

anbei noch etwas verspätet meine Zeichnung vom 28.08., 19:45-20:00 UT (also kurz nach Ende der nautischen Dämmerung), beobachtet mit meinem 20" Dobson mit 128x Vergrößerung und Lumicon Comet Filter. Der Komet befand sich etwa 16° über dem Horizont. Den Ionenschweif konnte ich nur mit dem Filter erkennen.

13P/Olbers on the evening of 2024 October 27 UT was magnitude G=9.9 as calculated from 10x30 second images taken with no filter in an aperture diameter of 4'. The images were collected below an altitude of 3 degrees thanks to a very clear dark sky near the horizon.

13P/Olbers on the evening of 2024 November 1 UT was magnitude G=10.1 as calculated from 25x20 second images taken with no filter in an aperture diameter of 4'. The images were collected at an altitude below 6 degrees in hazy skies. The stacked images show a comet coma of 3' and a very short tail NNE of the comet coma.

13P continues to stay relatively bright even so long after perihelion. On the evening of 2024 November 5 UT 13P was magnitude G=10.0 as calculated from 30x10 second images in an aperture diameter of 4'. The images were collected at an altitude around 4 degrees which did not show the comet very well in the color image as twilight was fading in a hazy sky. The comet has stayed right around magnitude 10 for the last 10 days, maybe some of our specialists can explain how this comet is so slow to fade away. At this rate 13P may become the brightest comet in our skies again if C/2023 A3 continues to fade as quickly as it has in the past few weeks.

13P on the evening of 2024 November 10 UT was magnitude G=10.1 as calculated from 10x20 second images taken thru no filter in an aperture diameter of 3'. This is still an impressive comet when one considers that these images were taken at an altitude around 2 degrees with lots of haze at that altitude in a fading evening twilight moonlit sky with a 50mm refractor and yet one can still see a 3' coma + very short fan tail at PA 50 degrees in this FOV of 1x1.2 degrees.

My friend Roland, there is another comet roaming the early morning skies that still wants its rightful place as a bright comet although slowly fading from that list. Comet 13P/Olbers on the morning of 2025 January 9 was magnitude G=12.1 as calculated from 6x20s no filter images plus 15x20s red filter images in an aperture diameter of 1.4' as the morning twilight skies brightened. Collected these images before attempting to image C/2024 G3 but did not get around to processing them until now due to C/2024 G3, health and family issues. One can assume that 13P has probably faded another magnitude or so since these images were collected, but before we became spoiled by the recent list of very bright comets including 13P we would consider a magnitude 13-14 comet bright. So Roland, swing that big telescope of yours over to 13P one of these mornings and show us what it still looks like, I suspect it is still a nice comet.

dear mike, nice of you thinking of me, but 13P is VERY low for my observing site and not accessible in the eastern morning sky. And in my regard my telescope is NOT big, but as a poor retired person i cannot afford a more suitable one .....

13P/Olbers in a very dense star field on the morning of 2025 February 24 was magnitude G=15.1 as calculated from 60x10s images in an aperture diameter of 0.4'. The comet has faded several magnitudes in the last 7 weeks.

13P/Olbers on 2025 July 26 UT was magnitude 17.7 as calculated from 30x10 second images taken thru no filters in an aperture diameter of 0.2'. Not much to see anymore in a small refractor but it does bring back some good memories.
