Hello All,

I use Google to translate the forum into English and most of the time it works OK. I had to laugh when I saw this translation though

Is this a special use of the word Amateure in German?

In case you were wondering, it is not an April 1st joke. Google gave the same result yesterday

No, of course not. The root word is the latin word "amare", to love. Therefore another german use of "amateur" is "Liebhaber" which can be translated as "lover" in english.

Hi Torsten,

Yes I can see the possible connection. I made some experiments. Google translates "amateure" as "amateur" unless you include "and the" ( "und die" ) so it is looking at the context. Like the famous book "Sex and the single girl" and the TV series "Sex and the City". I am not sure "Sex and the radial velocity of exoplanets" would be a best seller though

Hi,
to be exact amateur is a French word which has the latin amator as its root. The corresponding verb is amare. When you are in doubt about the meaning use
